in A Case Of You, the main line is not a compliment. She's calling him weak. "I could drink a case of you, and still be on my feet" You're nothing, watered wine, I'm stronger than you even if you give me your all.
and I have heard that songs hundreds of times, sang it at least as many, and this time I just happened to throw some disdain I had left pver from an earlier line into that line, and holy shit. The rest of it has always had that bitter taste to it, but I had been still hearing that line as sweet and romantic, or bitter in a longing way, but that recolors that whole thing for me. That line finally fits the feel of the rest of it for me. Now i qwant to do a dark, heavy cover version of it again
ZOMG Joni! I remember waiting outside for the record store to open the day CLOUDS was released.
When she sang The Circle Game on Friday night for the Olympic Opening, it was nice to hear her mature voice (along with the rest of us) has dropped three octaves.
hey, let's have a Joni-karaoke party! My voice is pretty much shot, and I can't play the guitar anymore, but I can harmonize offkey. (Gee, I sure do know how to sell myself, yes?)
I can see the weakness thing as a legit reading. And yet...there is something about telling someone that they are in your "blood like holy wine" that seems like something you don't say to someone you consider to be weak. So... I think either interpretation is reasonable.

It seemed like I sang more Joni Mitchell songs in voice recitals than any thing else.
The way I see it, he said,
You just can't win it,
everybody's in for their own gain, you can't please them all...

Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet

But I like yours better.
