ETA: Wikipedia says it was released initially in a double bill with Grave of the Fireflies, which would indeed imply something far more serious underneath, yeah. Or it'd be a paradigm shifting without a clutch.
Having read that guy's take on the movie, I think it has about as much validity as "and he had a hook for a hand!" Which is to say, it is easy to spin creepy legends with very little basis in reality.
