I am not a christmas person but I think November 15 is appropriate. If you like the holiday, and like to decorate, than there is nothing wrong with putting it all up in November.
If it is a real tree, it should go up no earlier than a week before Christmas and actually not before the 20th because they dry out. Taking it down should be done on the 6th of January or whenever there are more needles on the ground than on the tree it totally dries out. (Dad used to go out to get the tree on December 23. One year that became impossible, so we got a fake, which we still have, which is why they're a great investment, even if they don't smell quite as good.)
Artificial trees should not go up before Thanksgiving. You'll just bump into it all the time. It can come down anytime after New Years' because Gnädige Yul does not apply to fake trees.
There is a song from Mame, "We Need a Little Christmas," that might set the mood if you need mood setting. Meanwhile, I need to pop downtown to see if they've erected the tree yet (last year it was up before Veterans' Day, and that's too early.
I think that is an excellent idea. I'd do something similar if there were room in our flat for a tree. as is, I have some christmas lights to put up in my room that are going to stay up once there. I bought only blue and white so they aren't really christmasy so much as, um, just twinkly and comforting in that way that little twinkly lights are.
