WHAT ARE JUMPING UP AND DOWN ON MY LAST NERVE.

Really, i been brewing a couple ideas here for a while, but am finally gonna vomit them out.

I do not understand people who talk about all the privileges they did not have as why they don't get white privilege. I grew up welfare poor,(actually social security poor, so i envied welare kids because they got foodstamps and school lunches) no insurance, raised by a widowed alchoholic abuse survivor mom and her mother. I was mentally different to the point where i no longer had sane privilege early on, and was one of like 4 white girls in my neighborhood, i didn't have local majority privilege, and sometimes even got fucked with for being white.

So you'd think if anyone was gonna pull some "what privilege? just because i was white doesn't mean i wasn't OPPRESSED!" BULLLSHIT IT'D BE ME. but instead, when i irst heard the term White Privilege, i was like "holy shit, there's a name for it" an recognized myself in it. Because since white priv was the only one I had, it was really obvious to me that when i was treated diferent than my classmates and neighbors, it was a white thing.

So, it makes my brain explode when people think lack of other privileges cancel out white privilege. THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS.

ALSO, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE'S PAIN IS THAT YOU CAN NEVER REALLY UNDERSTAND IT LIKE THEY DO.
I could type or an hour about, frex, y labor pains, or my mental episodes, but if you haven't felt them, you can't do more than relate, not understand. So it is not the job of people who have been hurt to try to ake you understand their pain. They can explain what hurt them, and you can FUCKING LISTEN, and try to relate, and accept that ven though you can not understand their pain, it is STILL REAL AS FUCK. AND EVERYONE'S EXPERIENCES OF PAIN WILL BE DIFFERENT.IT DOES NOT MINIMIZE YOUR PAINS TO ACCEPT OTHERS HAVE PAIN TOO.

And as ar as deanding others help you understand, go read, it's out there.

my god, people. stfu.

An author whose books I actually read and enjoy, although I've just discovered him, has stepped in the shitpile now, and looks like he's really gonna step in it hard if i keep reading the thread, and i was just about to start one of his books. please no

re shtrly and taxes. I found his blogpost where he talks directly about deliberately stayong under the poverty line to not fund the government and therefore fund war. I will not link directly to his journal, but he hass a handy taxes tag.

It's a very effective way to silence people. Regardless of what effect it has directly on [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink, others who see this drama are seeing that if they piss the wrong people off, or call the wrong people out, they are fair game for outing. This can affect people's livelyhoods and safety. Therefore, people who can't afford to have their usernames connected to their legal names, maybe because they post about queer issues and can't be out to family/work, or because they post things that could make them a target for internet crazies, like feminists and 4chan, or just that they post about social issues in a way that could hurt them with a conservative employer, all those people, will be scared silent. It's better than censorship, because you can still claim you never said they couldn't say anything, ut if they do, they know you may out them if you disagree with them.

Therefore, you are silencing the marginalized, while allowing those with certain comfortable privileges to post without a second thought, because it will not affect their life if you out them.

Although I am not fond of my meatspace name, you're still welcome to call me out by it if it's some kind of issue where you think I'm hiding behind my username. Of course, I've been this username for over ten years, and more people know maevele than know me as given name. But, you people who insist everyone should use their "real" name, have you ever been stalked? Ever see what happens when certain chunks of the net get someone's contact info that they don't like? (see 4chan and feminists, last year, frex)

Maye that's why some people don't broadcast their "real" names, rather than an unwillingness to stand behind their words
