I wanna go somewhere with significant male traffic and ask how often the men are randomly engaged in conversation by anyone of any gender on public transport etc. unless the bus is crowded so you have to acknowledge the person you sat on. Like from innocuous as 'what you reading?' or 'cute netbook' up to blatant hit ons like anything starting with 'hey baby'?

Because apparently there is some argument that skeezing on women on the bus isn't, like, skeezing all the time, because some Genuine Nice Guys are just trying to make gentlemanly conversation, and it's meeeeeeeeen for women to take into consideration whether you might be one of the one in however many who is gonna be a full on asshole, and suggesting ways guys could make it clearer they aren't dangerous assholes, is calling all men rapists, and is women being MEEEN MEANIEHEADS by trying not to get skeezed on on the damn bus..

and I think I call bullshit.

I got semi-skeezed at in the business district post office here in Birmingham yesterday. It was bizarre. And then this other woman waiting looked at me sympathetically for a minute, before expressing relief that 'for once it wasn't her'. Which was irritating until I noted that she was blond and dressed in a skirt suit, and I felt a little more sympathetic.

I was in typical American attire--jacket and khaki pants that are hardly the form-fitting skinny jeans that are wicked in here right now. Maybe that made me more of a target, outsider clothes? I don't know.

Probably it says something about how things are for women that I forgot about it until you made this post.

Yeah, my friend [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, who's a survivor and does anti-rape activism all the time, actually took this position re: the XKCD comic, that everyone in the feminist blogosphere is overreacting and that she likes getting chatted up on trains. I was flabbergasted.

and y'know, if she likes that shit, she can go ahead and send signals that she wants to be spoken to, so those of us that don't, can have some damn peace of mind and not have to wonder if the chatter is a nice person who will respect it if we say 'don't feel like talking' or a fucking jerk who will get offended and follow us home.

If they were real gentlemen and nice guys, they'd get that women get solicited for male attention of some sort or another all the damn time and thus they would smile warmly in a gentlemanly fashion and then leave us the fuck alone.
