kinda tangenty though. I get that triggers specifically refers to something that sets you off into a trauma flashback type state. but what is the term for the more subtle thing, where something just vividly replants something into your head, and makes it more likely for it to turn up in your headspace and fuck you up?

Specifially, I'm a major depressive with history of self harm. I accidentally read a story including pretty vivid examples of these things, and although it did not in any way set off my current mntal shitstorm, it kinda set the tone, and increased the frequency of related thoughts in this episode.Even before my episode started, i hadnoticed the themes in the story staying with me. IS THERE A WORD FOR THAT?

I'd say it's a trigger, albeit an indirect one. Or perhaps you could describe it as "not good for my mental health" if you didn't want to dilute the term.

I'd say it's a trigger. Flashbacks aren't the only reaction to trauma.

That happens to me sometimes, and I call it a trigger for want of a better word.

...because I don't like to establish a threshold for misery, which would permit me to ignore the inciting cause. I don't want to accept "I only feel horrible, not terrible, so I won't address the issue yet," because IME by the time I feel terrible I lack the tools to address the issue at all.

I have no idea if there's a technical term, but I like the phrase "fucks with my head" ; ) I do use the word "trigger" to refer to something which sets off a depressive or anxious episode, esp one that probably wouldn't have happened or wouldn't have been as bad otherwise. This may be a dilution of the word, but less so since I tend to specifically say "triggers a depressive episode" or whatever. Also, I get the impression that a PTSD episode can take a variety of forms - you don't think yr back there every time - so in that respect, the term is malleable. But I don't know much about PTSD ...

I call it "toxic."

Most movies are toxic.

Most of what laughably is called 'culture' in the U.S. is toxic.

Love, C.
