I notice an awful lot of folks are using Last.fm, and I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing about it that makes it cooler than pandora? Because not only does pandora get my my jams, it uses the word "headnodic" in it's descriptions of why it picked me something. Why is Last becoming the radio of choice for so many?

last.fm has a plug in for itunes, so it learns what music you already have, and can build off of that. It will also play similar music it's seen people with similar tastes listen to... including obscure indy stuff. Sort of like P2P but you're not sharing any files.

the itunes lirary thing wouldn't e a enefit for me, vsince my itunes is on my other machine and full of stuff the other householders like.

I've played with last and found them more limited, and more likely to play the same song by a given artist, which frustrated me. but i can see how the "other people like this" thing would e cool.

I like that Last.fm tracks what I listen to (I find it interesting to see just how many times I've listened to a certain artist or track). You can download a plugin to track that works with just about any media player - so I track iTunes usage at work and WinAmp usage at home.

I also like that it shows me what my friends are listening to, and where we intersect. It uses what it tracks to make recommendations, and they are generally pretty good (I've found several new-to-me artists this way). I can recommend tracks and/or artists to friends and link them straight to samples. Plus, I can tailor-make playlists, listen to tracks that I've designated favorites even when I don't have that music on my machine, etc.

My husband uses & loves Pandora, and I can't convert him, for whatever that's worth. :)

I prefer Pandora, but that's just me.
