An author whose books I actually read and enjoy, although I've just discovered him, has stepped in the shitpile now, and looks like he's really gonna step in it hard if i keep reading the thread, and i was just about to start one of his books. please no

we like most of the racists in our life.

we don't want them to show us their racist asses, because it hurts us so deeply. we want to respect them. we want to think they wouldn't do that thing. we don't want to be disappointed.

because when we are faced with their racism, we must then decide how much of our self-respect/self-esteem/survival we must sacrifice to keep the all the other good things about that racist in our lives.
