I am also white, and I am consistently embarrassed by white peoples' collective capacity for utter self-involvement.

Oh, but that would mean actually getting it. It is so much easier to strain our shoulders patting ourselves on the back for being "progressive" enough to not be obvious asshats. ("Us" as the collective white people, there.)

It would also mean contributing to an environment where instead of flooding the world with our opinions, we fostered the kind of scenario in which the voices of those with experiences different from ours would be heard.

Every time I suggest this in a public forum I get white people trying to tear me a new one for suggesting that someone else's opinions are more valid than theirs, due to the fact that someone else has more experience dealing with the thing they are opining... on.
