May. 15th, 2010 02:02 ama cleaning to music day today, with some emphasis on cover songs. Which kinda got me thinking about cover songs as transformative works. Because, yeah, um, that greyson kid? transforms the fuck out of that gaga song. I caght damo's cover of when dves cry for the first time, and it is not the same song when he does it. Foo Fighters Darling Nikki? whole new songs. tori's covers all transformative works. anyway. I love cover songs.
Then i heard cornell's cover of thank you, and he took out that oh my my, and I get why, and a cover means you get to do what you want to it, bbut expecting that, anticipating cornell's interpretation of that one phrase, and not to get it punched me in the gut.
