in roughly chronological order.

I ran across a newer on of the "Damn I want to be him' yesterday in my random mediaing, and then while late night music video surfing, I hit three more in a row. So i decided to make a list of the people I have, for any real period of time, wished i could be, or identified with or self insert as, or whatever. just so i could see how it breaks down. This is mostly in an image/presentation way, rather than admiring their like Moral character or intellectual skills. I'm including a lot of my most original fandom, music, because, well, that's where most of my examples are, especially early on. I'm leaving out people who I thought of myself as for a specific purpose, like mike stipe.

Joan Jett. To this very day
Adam Ant. I wanted to be both of them since I was 8-10, for real. I couldn't yet tell a crush from wanting to be someone, and in their cases, I still can't.
Nancy McKeon. Jo from facts of life
Jodie Foster.
David Bowie
Cyndi Lauper
Drew Barrymore
BIllie jean in "Legend of billie jean' not the micheal jackson song.
Remington Steele
Judd nelson in breakfast club
Ally sheedy in real life
Johnny Depp in cry baby
Keanu reeves in Rivers edge?
George Micheal
Arthur Dent
Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue. I know. wtf.
Axl rose
Perry farrel
Sally Bowles, or the Emcee from Cabaret
Trent reznor. SHUT UP

Tim Curry But not frank.
Sophie B hawkins

I notice a gender imbalance. to say the least. I didn't expect it to be that long, but otoh, I could have gone on and on. i just need to look at the trends in this for myself, and figured i would share.

What a ride! Are these in chrono order, first to last?

(And really, who doesn't want to be Joan Jett. Do you remember that movie with her and Michael J Fox, Light of Day? She was great as a working-stiff musician with a day job (Fox was remarkably not horrible, too).)

Ah yes I remember the "be David Bowie or have David Bowie?" years very well. Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs and Patti Smith pretty much round out my top three. With you also on Michael Stipe and Eddie Vedder, but I'm curious as to Stipe's "special purpose" in your life.

For awhile I think I stopped wanting to be anyone, or, really, much of anything at all. But now I seem to want to be Lady Gaga. But who doesn't?

It's funny I never wanted to anybody else except when a young kid, I wanted to be Roy Rogers really, really, really bad -- or more to the point, I wanted to be a cowboy -- no, not a cowgirl, I wanted to be the cowboy. I made my little brother be the cowgirl ...

But what I really wanted to be was a horse.

Love, C.

I don't know if there's a gender imbalance so much as a clearly defined gender that spans both male and female, if that makes sense?

Anyway, I like your list. It is entirely faaaabulous.

I'd have to agree with both statements.

unbalanced if I were still trying to think of myself as somewhere between girl and neutral. but in terms of making sense of where I wound up genderwise, it makes sense
