okay, with losing a bunch of my main deck and using the back up deck that I have ISSUEs with, I find I need to shop for a new deck for the first time in, uh, 10 years? Not that I am buying one right away, and, uh, there are a few more decks out there these days, and there were a lot when I was doing this before. And there has been another big surge in creative and/or dark interpretations of the cards in the last ten years, it seems.

I may just get a new copy of my old farber/zerner deck. I need something where the symbolism is still pretty close to the RW, in theme and major elements, but not necessarily completely traditional in style. If anyone has recommendations, that'd be cool. I'm just glad I don't need to buy one RIGHT EFFING NOW, because this shit is gonna take some time. I can stick with the awkward backup deck til I find the right one.

I like the Universal Waite deck. It's the Rider Waite deck re-colored by Mary Hanson-Roberts (of the Hanson-Roberts Tarot). I read with that one when I can't lay hands on my Robin Wood deck.

There are tons of decks out there now. Tons. I remember when about the only two decks you could find readily were the RW, the Aquarian deck, and, if you had an occult store you could get to, the Thoth deck. Kids these days, you don't know how good you have it!

Heh. I remember when RW was first published and *hard* to find. I had mine hand-delivered to my building manager by one of Wood's friends, I am not making this up.

by RW do you mean Robin Wood or Rider Waite. I love, love, love both my Robin Wood and Mary Hanson Roberts decks though I have really not used them in a dang long time and am entirely out of practice. Ian uses the Sacred Rose deck and it is also really very cool and beautiful though I can only go on his appraisal of it since I've never read with it myself. At any rate the only other ones I am really familiar with are the Thoth (which I really don't recommend) and the Fantasy Showcase deck which is both rare and nigh well unreadable. It's really just a pretty way for f/sf artist to show off their chops and the cards are so different and poorly labeled that it makes for lots of guessing as to which card is which. Anyway long and rambly aside, I would go with a new Robin Wood deck if that is indeed what you use. Something to be said for tried and true, and it's one of two decks that I have replaced with newer less damaged or partially lost copies.
Wow, I never knew I had so much to say about tarot decks.
