okay, seriously, this whole getting into fanfic thing? fanfic is too big. how do you narrow it down, my god? the last i dabbled in reading fic was umpty years ago, on the farscape newsgroup, an i was just like "people are wrting d'argo/john smut! what a wondrous thing is the internet!" and there was not so damn much to pick from, and then i stopped having time to even watch farscape so i wasn't going to read the fic. Now umpty years later, i rediscover fanfic, and it has GROWN. And any fandom I am remotely interested in has a veritable flood of fanfic. and i can not tell what is crap til i read it. What are the best sources or tools to winnow it down?


eta: might help to give examples of fandoms I like. who/torchwood, buffy, trueblood.

It's so hard. I mean, I follow DW fandom and I still can't figure out what's worth a damn half the time. I guess you gotta skim and then find authors that are good and see what they're writing and who they're mutually friends with on LJ, and maybe what they're reccing.

You need recs, is what you need. You find some people who have generally the same taste as you and you recommend fics they like, and you read those. Eventually you'll start recognizing authors who don't suck, and reading their work. With big fandoms (buffy, DW/TW) it's the only way to find the stuff that doesn't suck.

The only fandom we have that overlaps is Torchwood, and my fanfic interests there are slightly less pervy than my general "find the darkest, deepest corner of the gutter and dive in" tactic, so I think I can point you toward torchwood_house without sending you screaming toward the hills. :)
