kinda tangenty though. I get that triggers specifically refers to something that sets you off into a trauma flashback type state. but what is the term for the more subtle thing, where something just vividly replants something into your head, and makes it more likely for it to turn up in your headspace and fuck you up?

Specifially, I'm a major depressive with history of self harm. I accidentally read a story including pretty vivid examples of these things, and although it did not in any way set off my current mntal shitstorm, it kinda set the tone, and increased the frequency of related thoughts in this episode.Even before my episode started, i hadnoticed the themes in the story staying with me. IS THERE A WORD FOR THAT?

I dunno, I call it 'triggery'.

It is all "triggers"; it is only a matter of degree. Wishing you the best.

I agree with the other folks; that's a trigger.

I don't get trauma-flashback experiences, but I have obsessive thoughts, so things which touch on Bad Times and Bad Places for me stick around for a long time sometimes, and crop up when I'd rather they go away, and intrude into my thought-space, and drag me back to BT&BP I'm not trying to revisit right then. It's not magically not a trigger just because it doesn't trigger a full-on dissociative-features panic attack.

Yup, that's a trigger. Trigger doesn't have to mean "stereotypical flashback." That's how it works for some folks, but not for everyone.

I'd go with triggery--that's the word I've seen used for when the same thing happens in OCD. It doesn't have to necessarily be about anything horrible, either (some of my triggers are pretty damn benign to the average viewer).
