Is it normal to charge money for sunday school? cuz I had no idea, and had just signed him in and traipsed off to church like 4 times now, and no one ever said anything about fees. And today the class leader sent me to talk to the coordinator, who asked if I had registered, and I was like, "I guess, I filled out the form the chick gave me the first day" which was not the right form. So we finally figured out he's not registered, becaue I was supposed to pay money. Which is not a big problem, just had not occurred to me at all, because I know shit about church, and what sunday school I went to as a kid was for poor kids, obv. So I had never heard of paying for sunday school, and looked like a damn fool in front of the admin chick, for having no idea. Yay me.

It's normal in Jewish congregations to charge tuition for religious school, I think. They also generally charge a straight-up membership fee (based on your income, on the honor system) rather than passing a collection basket, though.

This is UU, I'm assuming. It does not surprise me that a UU church would also charge tuition for religious school, but they should realize that people will not expect it, and make it clear up front rather than springing it on people.

I don't remember anything about being charged for Sunday school (but like you, the last time I dealt with Sunday school I was a kid and wouldn't have dealt with that anyway.) However, I'd imagine it would make sense, since there are materials to buy and stuff.

You know, the more I think about this the angrier it makes me.

How much do they charge for this?

Which UU congregation is it?

40 a year if you're a member, 55 if not. I'm not sure if you have to pay to be a member, but you have to pay for the "Membership Class"

and it's the big fancy frank lloyd wright one.

Referring to the discussion elsenet -- I agree that they're probably clueless rather than heartless. That particular variety of cluelessness was kind of endemic to Madison liberalism, at least back when I lived there.

Now, all I've ever attended was Catholic/Baptist/Pentecostal churches, but I've attended a heck of a lot of them and not a one ever charged.

Even VBS (Vacation Bible School) was free.

Wait, no. My family's Catholic church charges for VBS. But most of the churches around here do not.

Sunday school at my church was more like daycare, and it was free. Catechism classes were weekly in afternoons or evenings during the week, and I think those were free, too. Teachers were volunteer, usually somebody's parent.

Well, it's the UU, so no Jeebus. They have to pay to talk about respect and make plaster hands.
