re the latest DOOM
Jan. 17th, 2009 08:15 pmI may have been dismissive or condescending to at least one friend on my list who I do respect, just for being kinda 101 in this whole clusterfuck.
Sorry bout that. I'm not sure I'm much past the 101 stage myself.
This whole thing fucks with me. I don't expect better from society at large, because I'm not stupid, but I do expect somewhat better from certain subsets, and feminist sf writers who go to wiscon were one of those sets. This is what I get for expecting.
And y'know, I'm deeply bugged by the bit where those of us who are not academics are told our opinion holds less weight. If you can't afford college, were too busy working, or look at things from a different perspective than what (white middle class western) Academia proscribes, you count less.
I guess it's just a variation on the usual classism thing, tied in with the usual racism thing.
Also, I recommend nojojojo's post about how even as a PoC author, racist tropes still happen in her own writing to anyone who still thinks that "there's something racially weird here" means "AAAAAAH! YER IN THE KKK"
Y'know, in my old neighborhood, being told you had done something racist could actually result in getting your ass beat down, if it was proved true enough, and you meant that shit. So you'd think I'd have some horrible screaming fear of being called a racist if i fuck up. But I've gotten that everyone has this shit, and I should be grateful if someone points it out to me when I fuck up so I can fix it. But most of these people who act like the world is ending because they showed some racism and got called out on it didn't grow up in that kind of neighborhood. At least they all couldn't have.
I'm going back to the pants analogy. If your pants are torn and you are showing your ass, ad someone tells you, do you get mad at them for telling you your ass is showing, or do you feel glad someone pointed it out so you can fix it?
